Privacy Policy
Last updated October 24, 2026
The short version: Klaxon has no accounts, no advertising and no tracking cookies, and it never asks for your name or email address. A few things are recorded automatically so the site can run, and each of them is described below, along with every other service your browser contacts when you use Klaxon.
Who is responsible
Klaxon is run by Asher Malone in Sydney, Australia. Questions about this policy can be sent to contact@klaxon.live.
Server logs
Klaxon's pages are served by Vercel. The events and headlines on the map are read by your browser directly from Klaxon's database, hosted by Supabase, which also sends live updates while the map is open. Like any web server, both record standard details of each request: your IP address, your browser's user agent, what was requested and when.
These logs are used only to deliver the site, keep it secure and fix faults. Klaxon does not combine them with any other information or use them to identify anyone. Vercel and Supabase keep them for a limited period under their own policies, linked above.
Analytics
On klaxon.live, Klaxon uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits. It sets no cookies, does not use your browser's storage, and does not fingerprint your browser. It reports aggregate figures such as page views, referring sites, browser and device types, countries and page load times. It is not loaded on test versions of the site.
The map
The map's style and tiles are loaded from OpenFreeMap (tiles.openfreemap.org), which receives your IP address and user agent with each request, as any website you visit would.
Stored on your device
kx_min_magin local storage: the smallest earthquake magnitude you set on the slider. It uses the same name as in the first version of Klaxon, so a setting saved then still applies.kx_layers_collapsedin local storage, only if you collapse the layer menu.NEXT_LOCALE, a cookie that remembers your language when you choose one other than your browser's. It is a session cookie, deleted when you close your browser, and it is sent to Klaxon only so pages open in your language.
Local storage stays in your browser and is never sent to Klaxon or anyone else. You can remove all of these by clearing site data for klaxon.live in your browser settings.
Your location
Klaxon only uses your location if you tap "Show my location", and your browser asks your permission first. The location is used in your browser to centre the map and mark where you are. It is not stored, and it is not sent to Klaxon or anyone else. The map then loads tiles for that area, as it does whenever you move the map.
Links to other sites
Headlines, sources and the news search link take you to other websites, such as news outlets, USGS, GDACS and Google News. Their own privacy policies apply once you are there.
Where information is processed
Vercel, Supabase, Cloudflare and OpenFreeMap may process the details above in the United States and other countries outside Australia.
Visitors in the European Union and the United Kingdom
Where the EU or UK General Data Protection Regulation applies, Klaxon relies on its legitimate interests in running the site and keeping it secure as the legal basis for the server logs described above, and for the aggregate visit counts.
You have the right to ask for access to personal information about you, and to object to its processing. To do either, write to contact@klaxon.live, and Klaxon will act on it, including by asking Vercel or Supabase to act where the information is in their logs. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority: in the EU, the authority in your country; in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office.
Children
Klaxon is a general news and information site. It is not directed at children.
Questions and complaints
Klaxon does not hold personal information linked to you, so in most cases there is nothing to access or correct. You are still welcome to write to contact@klaxon.live. If you are not satisfied with the reply, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.
Changes to this policy
This policy describes Klaxon as it is today. It will be updated before accounts and photo and video uploads are introduced, and the date at the top of this page will change whenever it is.
