Data sources and attribution
Last updated October 24, 2026
Klaxon only uses sources whose terms allow it, and credits each one in the form it asks for. Credit lines below are quoted exactly. If you publish or own one of these sources and any detail here is wrong, please get in touch.
Map
- OpenStreetMap, the map data. Licensed under the Open Database Licence (ODbL) 1.0. Credit:
© OpenStreetMap contributors, linked to openstreetmap.org/copyright. The credit is shown in a corner of every map; on a phone it folds behind the (i) button after a few seconds. - OpenMapTiles, the vector tile schema the map is drawn from. Credit:
© OpenMapTiles, linked to openmaptiles.org. - OpenFreeMap, which hosts the tiles free of charge. It asks for the credit
OpenFreeMap © OpenMapTiles Data from OpenStreetMap, which the map shows. The map's colours are Klaxon's own.
Hazards
- U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), earthquakes and tsunami flags. In the public domain as a work of the United States government. USGS asks for credit in this form:
Earthquake data courtesy of the U.S. Geological Survey. Each earthquake links to its USGS event page. - GDACS (Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System), a cooperation framework of the United Nations and the European Commission, for volcano, cyclone, flood and drought alerts. Its terms of use provide its data as is and ask that it is not used in place of official alerts from local or national authorities. They set no credit line; Klaxon credits it as
Alert data from GDACSand links each alert to its GDACS page.
Earthquakes from other agencies
USGS stays the map's source for each earthquake. Reports of the same quake from the agencies below are shown beside it, each with its own magnitude, depth and intensity in its own scale. A felt quake USGS has not reported yet appears from these agencies first, and gives way to the USGS event once USGS reports it.

Tsunami warnings
Official tsunami messages are shown exactly as each agency issues them, credited to it and linked to the original. Klaxon never issues a warning of its own: in Japan only the Japan Meteorological Agency may issue them (Meteorological Service Act, article 23).
- NOAA's Pacific and National Tsunami Warning Centers, through tsunami.gov, and US warning zones from the National Weather Service API. Public domain as works of the United States government, used without implying NOAA's endorsement. Each message names its centre and links to its bulletin.
- 気象庁 (Japan Meteorological Agency) tsunami warnings, advisories and forecasts, from its disaster information XML, under PDL 1.0. Credit, shown with every message:
出典:気象庁ホームページ(https://www.jma.go.jp/bosai/map.html#contents=tsunami). The coastlines the warnings are drawn on are simplified from JMA's tsunami forecast area data:気象庁「津波予報区」GISデータ(https://www.data.jma.go.jp/developer/gis.html)を加工して作成. - Australia's Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre is not shown until the Bureau of Meteorology gives permission; Klaxon links to its warnings instead.
Volcanoes
- Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program, the catalogue of volcanoes (Volcanoes of the World). The database is a product of United States government employees. Credit, as GVP asks:
Global Volcanism Program, Smithsonian Institution, linked to volcano.si.edu. - U.S. Geological Survey volcano notices (HANS): each monitored US volcano's aviation colour code and alert level. Public domain; each level names its observatory and links to its notice.
- 気象庁 (Japan Meteorological Agency) eruption warnings, alert levels and eruption reports, under PDL 1.0. Credit, shown with each:
出典:気象庁ホームページ(https://www.jma.go.jp/bosai/map.html#contents=volcano). Levels are shown as JMA issues them; Klaxon never sets one. - GeoNet volcanic alert levels for New Zealand's volcanoes, under CC BY 3.0 NZ, credited with each level.
- Volcanic ash outlines from the international SIGMETs that meteorological offices issue for aviation, through NOAA's Aviation Weather Center. Public domain as a US government service.
Official reports
- 消防庁 (Fire and Disaster Management Agency, Japan), disaster reports. Used under the Public Data License (PDL) 1.0. Credit, shown with every report:
出典:消防庁ホームページ(https://www.fdma.go.jp/). Titles are shown exactly as published, because the licence asks that any edit be marked. - 행정안전부 (Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Korea), press releases. Used only where a release carries the Korea Open Government Licence (공공누리) Type 1, which Klaxon checks on each release. Credit, shown with every report:

Typhoon names
- The names are those of the ESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee. Japanese forms come from 気象庁 (Japan Meteorological Agency), used under PDL 1.0. Credit:

News
Klaxon stores only a headline, its link, the outlet and the time, never the article. Every headline names its outlet and links to the original.
- BBC News and BBC News Mundo, through their RSS feeds, whose terms encourage their use as part of a website. Credit:
BBC NewsandBBC News Mundo, with no BBC logos. - UN News (Noticias ONU), through its Spanish RSS feed. Its terms allow news material to be used with appropriate credit and the United Nations advised. Credit:
Noticias ONU. - The Guardian, through its Open Platform under a developer key for non-commercial use. Each headline keeps its byline and links to the article, the "Powered by The Guardian" logo is shown on each of them, and only on them, and, as the terms require, none is kept longer than 24 hours.
- The GDELT Project, which Klaxon searches to find coverage the feeds above miss. GDELT's terms allow free use with a citation and a link. Credit, shown with every headline found this way:
via the GDELT Project, linked to gdeltproject.org. The headlines themselves belong to their publishers. - Connected but switched off: ReliefWeb, until it approves Klaxon's application, and NewsData.io.

- MapLibre GL JS, which draws the map (BSD 3-Clause licence).
- Tabler Icons (MIT licence).
- The Geist typeface, and Noto Sans JP and Noto Sans KR in share images (SIL Open Font Licence 1.1).
